John Elway Day — Tight End Battle, the RB Room & Super Bowl 61 Talk Episode Transcript Kevin: Bourbon, Broncos, and No B.S. Snap, placement, kick on the way — and Denver's going to the AFC Championship Game. Good evening, Broncos Country. Welcome to another edition of Bourbon, Broncos, and No B.S. Let me say, happy John Elway Day. I don't care that they officially named it John Elway Day on his birthday, whatever, end of May. He was number seven. How do you not make it — so fine, you can have John Elway's birthday celebration officially recognized, but then you gotta have John Elway Day, which is today. Adam, I know you love the Duke. We're gonna talk about him tonight. How you doing, man? Adam: I am excellent, Kev, man. And it's not a hard ask if you ask me to be on the pod and say, "We're gonna talk some Elway tonight," because Elway's first year in the league was actually the year I was born. Yes, I am dating myself a little bit. The face would say one thing; the ID says a completely different thing. Adam: But yeah, Elway's whole career was the only quarterback that I knew until I was, I think, in eighth grade when he retired. And so it was — I remember feeling very weird seeing Brian Griese line up under center the next year. I mean, just all the things that happened in Elway's career — the Super Bowls, the individual plays, everything. As far as influential players that have come along since I've been watching football, John Elway is at the very top. And I don't even know who'd be a close second at this point. I mean, it's John Elway and kind of everybody else at this point. Kevin: No, and there was something obviously just special to the way he played the game, right? The intensity he brought to the field. And it started with — man, this guy, for better or worse, was gonna stick by his guns, right? And you saw it as soon as he was drafted, which makes you wonder, like, why would the Giants go and draft Eli all those years later after he was doing the same thing of, "Hey, I'm not playing for you. Don't draft me." And then, "Yeah, we're gonna call your bluff anyway." Well, that doesn't work out for you, does it? Kevin: But to know that John Elway was saying, "We're not going to Baltimore. I'm not playing for the Colts" — because nothing against Indianapolis, nothing against the ownership, nothing against Baltimore, nothing against the fan base. Adam: Nothing against — exactly. Kevin: It was the coach. It was the coach. He said, "I am not going to play for that guy." And dude, it's just funny to see how it all worked out, how Denver happened to be the place that landed him. The Raiders tried to get him. All these other teams tried to get him. Can you imagine growing up seeing John Elway play for the Raiders? Adam: Oh, don't. Kevin: I mean, I'm gonna say it because we didn't have to experience it, and we're never gonna have to see John Elway play for the Raiders, but that could've almost happened. That almost happened. Adam: I mean, if you wanna talk about — what we were talking about offline is some of the "what if" stuff that we put on the website. Yes, that is your soft transition to go check out the website, because there's some cool stuff written up there that you may wanna check out. One of the articles in there is Broncos What If. I love alternate history. I love kinda thinking up hypothetical situations, and one of the things that I thought about writing for an article — I can't remember if I put this up there or not; maybe it's still in the idea phase — but what if the Broncos hadn't drafted John Elway, and what if he goes and plays baseball? Adam: The Yankees scout that was pushing for the Yankees to draft him was adamant that he believed John Elway was a Hall of Fame third baseman. A lot of guys are two-sport athletes; John Elway was a legit two-sport athlete, and legitimately could have signed with the Yankees without breaking a sweat and leaving the NFL to do whatever. But as far as the impact of that, what is Denver without John Elway? What is John Elway without Denver? The two are synonymous with each other now. There's a good chance you don't have the two Super Bowl titles. You don't have the one Super Bowl title as an executive. Kevin: Three. Adam: I don't know that you have any of those. Maybe you have them in a completely different way, but can you really separate the two now? I almost wanna say that this was just kind of another football town without John Elway. Kevin: Yep, 100%. I mean, nobody really cared until John Elway came to town. The Broncos had been around since the 1960s, but they hadn't done anything. Made it to a couple Super Bowls, but got their butt whooped, right? John Elway comes into town and everything just changes. You can hear it from our parents. I wasn't alive during the early John Elway years — okay, just so everyone knows, I didn't. Kevin: But hearing it from my mom and parents and just people growing up, it changed. It changed the entire dynamic of Denver. Michael says, "Wash your mouth out with that soap." I'm guessing in reference to Elway playing for the Raiders. Michael, I'll wash my mouth out with soap when you renounce your Las Vegas Knights. Adam: You've been called out, sir. Kevin: I went there. Let's talk about just a couple of our favorite John Elway moments and memories. Guys, put it in the chat. I know — how do you pick one? I'm gonna go first, man. I'm gonna take the easy one off the table. Adam: Easy one off the table. Kevin: I'm gonna make you do the work. But this is genuinely my very first Broncos memory. I was, what, six or so at the time, and I don't remember any of the Super Bowls before that, but I very distinctly remember the moment my mom screamed when John Elway did his helicopter. Adam: Nice. Kevin: That essentially was like, "We're winning this game." And that moment is solidified into my brain — just seeing how excited my mom was, her being a lifelong Bronco fan, understanding that this is the thing that she had finally been waiting for herself. It's something you can't replicate. That helicopter move will always be my number one Broncos moment. Adam: So I will work a little bit for mine. What I will say about that moment, though, is I remember the helicopter — he spins down, he lands hard on the ground, and my first thought was, "Is he okay?" And then he got up, and immediately at that point, like you and probably a lot of other people, no doubt in my mind, I'm like, "We're winning this game. It's already done. The moment's ours. I don't care what Green Bay does, we're winning this game." And it turned out to come true. Adam: So I'm gonna go a little bit different route. My favorite John Elway memory is actually my first Broncos game ever. My dad took me to my first Broncos game for the AFC divisional round versus the old-school Houston Oilers, now the Tennessee Titans, who still had Warren Moon at quarterback. They had a bunch of really good wideouts, I remember. I made a sign — that's how excited I was. Adam: And so my dad took me to the game. I got to watch him lead a fourth-quarter comeback. I remember how green the grass was and how orange the uniforms were. I remember that it was an okay place to act like a total lunatic. Kevin: Right. Yes. I still do. Adam: To let my little eight-year-old freak flag fly at that point was a fun time. And then I remember seeing him do his thing. The big play was a pass to Vance Joseph that got him down to field-goal range, and then David Treadwell hit the game winner. It was imprinted in my head. That is a core memory to this day. Being able to see your hero do his thing — and not even do it on TV, do it live, in the stadium. And just as an added layer, this was still at old Mile High. So old Mile High felt structurally unstable when it got rocking, and it was rocking. Me and my dad were this close away from each other and couldn't hear each other talk. It was an awesome memory, awesome day, awesome Elway moment. I could probably talk at least another half hour about this, but that wouldn't be very — yeah. Kevin: Well, there's gonna be plenty of time. John Elway, it's a name that's synonymous with Denver football. But I do wanna — this is a good question from Mike. Hey, Sean. Sean is in the chat. Glad to see you here, buddy. Mike, great question: Does John Elway win those two Super Bowls without Terrell Davis? I wanna hear your take first. I have an answer, and another answer that will lead us into the continuation of training camp coming up here soon. But this is very true. One of the big reasons we struggled winning those Super Bowls early on was 'cause we didn't have a real big run. Everything was on John Elway's shoulders. It wasn't until we got some actual running back help in the backfield that John Elway was able to get us over the hump and get us those Super Bowls. So what do you think, man? Adam: We see historically that John Elway and his greatness was good enough to get them the three Super Bowls, but John Elway by himself was not enough to win those three Super Bowls. Just hearing other people in the space break down those Super Bowl teams that Elway took — it's kind of a motley crew of names. Don't get me wrong, there's some good players in there. Dennis Smith was part of those teams. Carl Mecklenburg was part of those teams. Simon Fletcher was part of those teams. But man, did Elway have enough of a supporting cast to really have any business, or a serious chance, of winning those games? Not really. So I wanna say that Elway doesn't win that Super Bowl if he doesn't have Terrell Davis with him. And honestly, one of the things that would've taken a long time for the stink of it to wash away would be if John Elway had never won a Super Bowl. If he had gone 0 for four or 0 for five, that would be the constant thing following him, like it follows Dan Marino a little bit even now: yes, individually a great player, yes, individually did so much for the community and the city — but at the same time, history remembers winners. And there's a reason the Buffalo Bills of the '90s don't get the love that they — because going to the — oh my goodness, I did not mean to hit a pain point there. Look at KevDad just gleefully — Kevin: Yeah. Yeah, give him some more. Adam: KevDad's got his popcorn over there. Anyway — making four straight Super Bowls is a great accomplishment in and of itself. Is anybody gonna give him the credit due, because did they win any of those Super Bowls? The answer is no. So as unfair a standard as that may be, if Elway doesn't win those, he's maybe not in the pantheon of the greatest to ever play the game. He's just in that Dan Marino, Fran Tarkenton category of quarterback — guys who were great but never won the big one. And that wouldn't be fair. Looking at it now, that wouldn't be the legacy that would be worthy of him. And I'm saying that as a homer, so — but I really feel like once he won the first one, that completed the circle for me. That was first-ballot Hall of Famer, certified, Denver legend, will never have to buy another drink in town again type of person. And he ended up becoming that. Kevin: Yeah. I love it. I'm gonna give my thoughts on that answer here in just a second. But first, we got some halftime announcements that we gotta knock out. But with that being said, we are, again, about two weeks away from the rookies reporting for the 2026 Broncos training camp. Let's get ready for it. And it feeds in from the last topic to this one, man. I think it was very clear that Terrell Davis was the keystone piece that we were missing to win those Super Bowls. John Elway could get us to the Super Bowl, but you can't rely on just one guy to win the game for you, right? And Terrell Davis not only brought that running game, but brought everything together. And my question for you is: who is Bo Nix's Terrell Davis? Kevin: Because I think same thing. If you try to put it all on him, can we get to some Super Bowls? Yeah. If you don't have a run game to help him out, are we gonna win 'em? I don't know. And I don't think J.K. Dobbins is that answer. Do we have the answer, Adam? And if not, what do we need to do to get him? Adam: Man, I almost feel like that's not fair to the guys in the running back room, because Terrell Davis is a Hall of Famer, and holding him to — plus, also a different era of running back, where you were looking for a three-down running back that could play on passing downs. So if there's somebody who I think has three-down potential in them, I would say the rookie this year, Jonah Coleman, has shown that at Washington — has shown that he is a capable runner and also a very capable pass catcher out of the backfield. So I think maybe the better question is: is there enough in the running back room that can be a Terrell Davis type of situation? I would say yeah, I do think so. 'Cause now there's insurance for J.K. Dobbins if and when he goes down. I would like to remind you there are three certainties in life: death, taxes, and J.K. Dobbins gets hurt at some point. And honestly, from what we saw from RJ Harvey last year, RJ Harvey is gonna be, I think, a very big piece of the offense. He gives you a little bit of everything. He's your best home run threat on the ground. He is your best pass catcher out of the backfield. So I think between the three of them, they have all three downs covered. Is necessarily one of them a like-for-like Terrell Davis? Eh, no, and that's not any disrespect to them. I think the running back position is just — this is how teams are kind of attacking it now, with multiple backs that fill multiple roles. Kevin: Agreed. Either way, we're not gonna get somebody who's gonna be rushing for 2,000 yards in a year. That just doesn't happen anymore. To get 1,000 rush yards in a year is pretty much like, holy crap, you had an amazing season. And that's usually a guy that is that first-down and usually the third-down back as well. Maybe there's some cycling, but they're very heavily used. There's so much to it now with blocking and pass catching and all those things that weren't really required of running backs back then. Could you run the ball? Could you get up after being smacked into the ground and do it again? And could you do that over and over and over again without getting hurt? Yeah? Okay, cool, get out there. Those were running backs of the good old days. So are we gonna find that? No, and I'm not saying we need that, but we do need some sort of consistency out of the backfield. And I do think that's one area on the offense — between that and tight end — where we've had a lot of changeover. And I think if we can solidify those positions with RJ Harvey, with Jonah Coleman coming up behind him now too, get another good — well, we still have other running backs in the backfield other than that, lower down the list, that could be that number three guy. But you utilize J.K. Dobbins to the max you can this year, and hopefully he stays healthy all season, that'd be great. Then we could talk about maybe bringing him back next year, if he stays healthy all the season. But let's just, again, look at history and say, "Hmm, I think I know how this one's gonna end." It's just more of an if versus a when. Adam: Right. Kevin: When you look at — I know it's not running back talk, but Evan Engram, right? If you're good for one touchdown all year — if you can get one more touchdown than I can in the NFL, you're probably not gonna be on the Broncos for another season. Okay? I'm not saying you have to get 25, but you probably need to be getting at least six, seven, or eight touchdowns in the season to be like, "Yeah, okay, you had a decent tight end year." But anyway. Adam: I just got this image of you at the end of the line in your little three-point stance — Kevin: Oh yeah, I've been practicing. Kevin: Yes. I could show you, but I'm not going to. Adam: Since we're talking maybe Evan Engram, and we're gonna talk some preseason here in a little bit — would you say right now that one of the most interesting positional battles that may be on the horizon is tight end? I know they re-signed Adam Trautman. I know they think really highly of Evan Engram and say they're gonna scheme stuff for him, I guess. But the Broncos did draft two guys, and Justin Joly and Dallen Bentley look like they could be players. So of the tight ends that we already have, who would you say — and you have to cut two, because now we have two rookies — who would you say makes the cut, and who would you say adds to their resume as ex-Broncos? Kevin: Well, let's look here. Let's go check out our website here and see who we got — for tight ends. Adam: Oh, 'cause there's a roster on there. There is. Kevin: Oh. We have a roster now. So now we just gotta go down to the tight ends, and if you look, we got a lot of tight ends. Adam: A lot of tight ends. Kevin: A lot of tight ends. So, man, it's almost like — do you recognize the name? If you don't recognize the name, they're probably not making the team. And I hate to say that. I'm not just being mean, but when you have — Adam: You're not, yeah. Kevin: A team that has so few open positions, right? So, like, Dallen Bentley — maybe he's a practice squad guy, I don't know, but probably not a guy that's gonna make the team. Obviously we're looking at Justin Joly, Evan Engram being the number one, number two, and then you're looking at — what is it? It could be Adam Trautman. Is it gonna be Lucas Krull? I know you are a big — Adam: Lucas Krull. Kevin: Fan of this guy. Nate Adkins. Adam: Yeah, yes, Krull. Kevin: Right? So you have three guys that really are the ones fighting for this third tight end position on the team — and to make themselves knowable. I mean, who knows? Dallen Bentley there could go out and make a huge name for himself during training camp. He's a beast — 264 pounds, 6'4". This is a guy that is not gonna just get pushed over really easily. So maybe he goes out there and he pushes these guys out of contention, and now you have another rookie who — we love building through the draft, we love finding this young talent and keeping them around, and if this guy shows that he has, you know, could at least have a higher ceiling than these other guys of Trautman, Krull, and Adkins — I don't know, maybe you give it to him. But that's — it's tough, man. Adam: I mean, at least for me — did you mention the basketball player, Caleb Lohner? Did you mention him? Kevin: I did not. I did not. Adam: There's Lohner in the conversation, too. So I think if it's me — if either one of those guys, Joly or Bentley, or if Bentley has an amazing preseason — I could honestly see a scenario where maybe they go Engram, the two rooks, and Nate Adkins, who kind of fills a lot of different roles on the team. And maybe just going with four, I could easily see a scenario where maybe Adam Trautman isn't brought back. As much as I hate saying it — seeing as I am the president, founder, CEO, CFO, and lead chaplain for the Lucas Krull fan club — that would be tough for membership. I mean, membership's already hard right now. You know how that goes. But that's — Lucas Krull has had numerous opportunities to prove himself on the roster. That's a different conversation for a different day. But I mean, Joly and Bentley really graded out really well. They're great prospects. I think if those guys can show that they can contribute this year, I think that may be a problem for a guy like Trautman. I even think it could be a problem for a guy like Engram, who's on the last year of his deal anyway. Adam: They drafted the two guys kind of as future picks, but I could easily see a scenario where they go out and they really impress — they could push for roster spots and for playing time even this year. As you were saying, Kev, these are big guys. Bentley's 6'4" and 250. I think Joly is 6'5", 6'6", and a really athletic 245, 250. So these are big athletic guys, and we've been looking for somebody to stabilize that position for years now. So if you can get one or both of those guys to kind of maybe be like our Gronkowski and Hernandez — hey — Kevin: Boom. Done. Adam: I'm down. Let's do it. Kevin: Let's do it. I love it. Adam: But you know, I — Kevin: Well, maybe — I was gonna say, if we start getting enough star donations, we'll start sending it off to science, to see if we can research anything there to help out. Adam: There you go. Hey, the good Lord blessed me with a lot of stuff. Facial hair — or, it's just not — it wasn't in the cards. Kevin: It's okay. You got the youth. That's what you got — the look of youth. Adam: I'd be a triple threat if I had it. It wouldn't be fair. You know, I'd be handsome, smart, and have a great goatee. But I — Kevin: You gotta share the rest with some of the others of us, you know? Adam: Exactly. Thank you. Kevin: You can't take all of it. Adam: Thank you. I can't, that'd be selfish. Kevin: But speaking of thank you — Jose, thank you very much for the donation, sir. Definitely appreciate it. And he says, "Look, we are less than 80 days away, almost 75 days away, from kickoff." And the Broncos have got to get through all of training camp and their three preseason games. So things are about to start getting real hairy here, with lots of good news and information coming out of Broncos training camp. We get to see how these position battles are actually unfolding, which ones are maybe developing where we weren't expecting any, and see what kind of team we put together at the end of preseason. So 74 days is not very far, keeping in mind that we still have 14 days to go until training camp starts. So these guys had better be getting ready. Adam: Yeah, yeah. Kevin: And then maybe some blue. Adam: Maybe a little brighter, yeah. But then we put some navy blue in there, boom, you got it. Kevin: I like this, though. So the comments are backing that up completely. For sure. Let's see — make sure I cut up here to the end. "Fan Adam, are we winning this year?" Talked about that. Yes, we're gonna win. 15 and two, maybe 14 wins. Adam: Ooh. Kevin: Adam, once we get to the show before training camp, we're gonna give our way-too-early season predictions. Adam: Way-too-early predictions. Kevin: It's not official. You'll get one more chance before the start of the season to lock that in as your official prediction that I will hold you to the rest of the year. But we'll talk about some unofficial predictions in a few weeks. James, glad to see you here, buddy. Glad to have you in the comments. Can't wait to go on a road trip for the opener. It's gonna be a rough one, man. I think this is a good time to have it, though. Playing on the road against KC is always tough. But to get it in week one, where you're as even as you're gonna be, right? Adam: Exactly. Kevin: Mistakes are gonna happen on both sides of the ball, both teams, whatnot. But when you know how big of a game this is, and you remember we were on the beneficial side of another team losing in week one, that affected us all the way at the end of the season. So I think this Broncos team understands what's really at stake. Are they gonna be playing for first place at the end of the season because of week one, or are they gonna be playing for a wildcard slot — or positioning in wildcard territory — at the end of the season because of week one? Adam: I've been kinda thinking about that, too. As somebody who took the roadie to go see a game in Arrowhead during the Russell years, which we won't talk about — Kevin: Nope. Adam: I will tell you right now, Arrowhead, as far as a historical or significant place to go see — I would say if you're a Broncos fan, go check it out. It's actually kind of a cool stadium. For as much as I despise that team, the fans are actually pretty cool. They're not too bad. They're not terrible. I mean, granted, they're Chiefs fans, so they can only be so good. Kevin: They're not Raiders fans, though. Adam: You know what? There was a shared moment between me and a Chiefs fan where they actually said, "At least you're not a Raiders fan." We shook hands and then parted ways at that point. Kevin: Yeah. Adam: This is the perfect opportunity to get Mahomes probably at his weakest now that he's rehabbing from his injury. And Travis Kelce — maybe Tay Tay will let him out to go play for that game. I don't know. I don't think he knows either. But I am looking forward to it, because I think that is gonna be a statement-making win to start off the season. And I wholeheartedly believe that. Kevin: Agreed. You know, it's just funny — whenever you meet any football fan out there, you can always bond, as long as you're not a Raiders fan — Adam: Not a Chiefs fan. Kevin: We can be friends. And that clears the air over everything instantly. That's an instant connection. So that's what I found to break the ice: hey, at least you're not a Raiders fan, and we can be friends. Let's see — Jose, man, I love your upbeat comments and everything. They're really big. They kinda take over the whole screen. Sorry, it's not that I'm ignoring you. I love it, though — the energy, guys, if you're seeing these in the chat. Yeah, look, we have everything going for us right now. We're healthy. I mean, every team is healthy and whatnot, but this team is gonna have a chip on their shoulder. And so, Adam, before I hand it over to you for closing thoughts — again, two weeks, we're here nearing the end of the off-season. Things are actually gonna start happening. It's gonna get exciting. We just gotta have the right mentality, the right mindset going into this. If they play like a team with a chip on their shoulder — like, "We should have been the top dogs" — I think that's gonna benefit them as long as they keep that contained. But I think they have the right leadership. They've shown that they keep growing year after year, and I just don't see how that's gonna be any different this year. Adam: No, I would agree with that. I would 1,000% agree with that. It's gonna be hard to kind of recreate that atmosphere and all the intangibles from last season. But what I think some people are maybe missing out on — even including myself, who wasn't a fan of everybody being brought back for another season — is they have continuity now. In a league where typically you turn over 20 to 25% of your roster every year, the Broncos are gonna be one of those teams that actually aren't gonna have as much of a ramp-up time — ideally, because they're gonna be bringing back a lot of these guys. So maybe that does mean we get out to a faster start than we normally do. Maybe that does mean that, instead of needing those first few weeks to find our footing, maybe it's just like picking up a book, going back to the page we left off on, and just keep going. Kevin: Agreed. It'll be great. Look, we will be talking, before week one, about Sean Payton's history of September games. Adam: What? Kevin: And his attempt, at least last year, to address the problem of having a slow start — and not really working out, but it did, in the long run. Either way, it's definitely gonna be a topic that we're gonna be looking at, and seeing what they can do differently. And hopefully continuity is gonna be a big factor in that, because you're right. If this bombs, that's what people are gonna be pointing to. Really, they're gonna say, "It was a terrible off-season, terribly managed by the front office. What is Sean Payton doing? They should've known that bringing back these guys was not going to work, that nobody does it this way because it doesn't work." Adam: It doesn't work. Kevin: Right? We're just gonna hear that over and over again. So it has to — for my own sanity, it has to work. But I do think that, look, we have the money, right? And we could've made more deals. We could've traded away and been a little more aggressive if they really thought that's something we needed to do. But because they didn't, I'm gonna go ahead and trust them, because everything else they've done up until this point just shows that they deserve to have the trust of us fans. So until proven otherwise, I'm on board. I don't know how it's gonna look, but if they go out there and they start fast because of the continuity and everything — let's get rolling. Let's start racking up those wins while everyone else is trying to figure it out, and start pushing our way to Super Bowl 61. Adam: Amen. Let's do it. Kevin: I love it. Guys, as a little teaser, you're gonna wanna tune in next Tuesday as we dive a little deeper into what exactly we expect Mr. Davis Webb to be doing, and what that's gonna look like. Looking back at maybe some of his experiences from playing football, where he was in college and stuff like that, and what we've seen him do as the quarterbacks coach. And what can we extrapolate from all that information to indicate what kind of offensive coordinator he's going to be. And of course a lot of it is also gonna depend on what Sean Payton is going to allow him to do. It'll be a topic for next week. It's gonna be a good one. Adam: I don't wanna spoil what's going on next week, but we've already established Kev Dan only had one fewer receiving touchdown than Evan Engram had last year. I would also like to point out: me and Davis Webb have called the exact same number of plays at the NFL level.
