How y’all doing? Welcome to another edition of Bourbon, Broncos, and No B.S. My name’s KevDan. I am really glad to be with you here yet again. I’ve got the man, the myth, and the legend, the founder of Team Puffball himself — David. Look, I would like to have you on less, just because of the Team Puffball thing, but I don’t know, you’re kind of cool, so I’ll keep bringing you on. David: The demand for David and for Team Puffball supersedes— KevDan: It’s real. David: —your mortal wants or needs, KevDan. And so I am here because the people demand it, and thus I will continue. KevDan: I’ll be honest — on the topic of this, the next product I make for the website to be sold will be centered around Team Puffball. So I’m going to need your help maybe designing something, because I’m serious, there is a demand. I don’t get it — maybe because I was dumped by Team Puffball — but there is some real love for you guys. David: That’s it. I’d hate to say that there was nothing personal in the decision, Kev— KevDan: [laughs] David: —but we’ve gone over it a lot of times. It’s just a high standard on Team Puffball, and— KevDan: Yeah. David: —I just felt that it was time for a change. That’s all. KevDan: It is a monumental point in Bourbon, Broncos, and No B.S. history. David: Yes. KevDan: That shifted the course of all of our history from that point. David: Yeah. KevDan: Anyway. Buddy, we’ve got to talk about some Broncos. I’m glad everybody’s tuning in. I’ll fill you in a little bit more later on. But David, here we are basically three weeks away from the rookies reporting to training camp. Things are looking good for the most part. There’s a couple of things — obviously, maybe a Jonathon Cooper situation or whatnot — but what do you know about what these guys are doing this time, three weeks or so out from training camp? I imagine, especially for the rookies, the anxiety’s got to start growing a little bit. I’m sure they’re working out a ton. But from your experience, what are these guys doing right now? David: Well, there are various answers, and it just depends on the guy. But most of them, being on a Sean Payton team, they know what the expectations are for them coming into training camp — at least the veterans do. They’ve probably at least around minicamp communicated the expectations of the team. And it’s not a young team that’s not sure what direction it’s going in. It’s not a team that’s looking to surprise people, come out of the woodwork. This is a team that has legitimate Super Bowl aspirations this year. That being the case, the veterans surely told the new guys coming into the team, “Look, we are going to spend this offseason with our families, and we’re going to spend it preparing for training camp,” because you don’t get where you’re going in January and February by starting off poorly in July. KevDan: No. David: The guys who were here last year know that. They know exactly how much preparation and how much hard work it took to get to just the AFC Championship game. And if they want to not only get back there, but take that next step, they know how much it’s going to take this offseason. So what I would say is, again, it’s going to vary from person to person, but I would suggest that a large portion of the Broncos roster — or at least the players who are going to make the Broncos roster this year — are working at their craft, working out, and spending time getting to know what’s expected of them this offseason. KevDan: For sure. It’s going to be interesting, and also tough — tough from our perspective in terms of trying to come up with things to talk about. Normally you’d say there are 10 to 12 position battles, maybe two or three legit ones, and then some second- and third-string stuff, guys that just barely make the team. I think we really just have — man, there’s not much to talk about in that regard. Maybe four or five, and it’s more surrounding backups and who’s going to make the team, but there’s really not any real major ones, unless — are you tracking anything? David: I am. Well, it’s a very offseason topic to say it this way, but I’m really interested to see where the Broncos go at wide receiver six, or how that works out. It’s really going to be interesting to me because you’ve got, to me, five guys who are locks to make the roster at that position: Courtland Sutton, Jaylen Waddle, Troy Franklin, Pat Bryant, and — who am I forgetting? — Marvin Mims Jr. KevDan: Yeah. Thank you. Sorry. David: It— KevDan: You remind me. David: It may be Marvin Mims Jr.’s last year with the Broncos, but he’s still under contract for this year. So you’ve got now Lil’Jordan Humphrey trying to compete for that spot. You’ve got Hakeem Butler, who came over from the UFL — a big UFL signing for the Broncos — who showed the part in minicamp a little bit earlier this month. So that’s one that’s going to be really interesting to me. I’m also interested to see how the running back room shakes out. I have this prediction right now, KevDan, that Jonah Coleman might just be the next Broncos Country crush who is not ready to hit the field quite as early and often— KevDan: Yeah. David: —as Broncos Country thinks he is. I would imagine that we are going to see a very heavy dose of J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey at running back to start this season. And just the way that this Broncos offense is structured — and, you know, the X factor of course is a different play caller this year in Davis Webb — but just the way that this offense really does ask so much of its players, all of its players, I just don’t know that a fourth-round rookie running back is going to be a huge contributor the way that maybe Broncos Country hopes he will be, coming in off the draft thinking he was the answer to all these running back problems. Because all these podcasts had him as one of their favorite fourth-round picks of the draft. KevDan: Yeah. I think what you’re looking at when it comes to Jonah Coleman is a next-year situation — and hopefully so, because the only other situation I see him getting any meaningful time on the field would be if, knock on wood, God forbid, something happens to Mr. J.K. Dobbins. And look, we know the history, right? Maybe this year is the exception to the norm. So this whole time of getting Jonah Coleman ready to go out on the field is really important. And again, it goes back to what we’ve seen from this Sean Payton system in the past couple years. When rookies are called to go out on the field to step up, they do, more often than not. So I think we could expect that from Jonah Coleman. But Sean Payton has also said in the past that you know really quickly what you really have from your running backs. So I think we’ll see enough to be able to tell what that’ll look like, and then if not this year, then next year. Because I don’t see us bringing back J.K. Dobbins again, especially if Jonah Coleman is kind of taking the helm there. David: Right. Agreed. And so, KevDan, I kind of want to — this is not an original question, I have to say, but it’s one that I thought was really intriguing— KevDan: Sure. David: —who do you think is somebody from last year’s draft class that you’re really expecting to maybe break out a little bit this year? It always feels like there’s somebody in training camp who shows out a little bit, and it’s always encouraging to see that in a second-year player you just drafted last year. Is there somebody you’re really looking forward to? KevDan: It has to be Pat Bryant for me. David: Mm-hmm. KevDan: He’s the first one that pops to mind, and he kind of has to. Look, Courtland Sutton isn’t getting younger. Jaylen Waddle isn’t the youngest, but he’s got plenty of years left, right? But either way, we need to start looking toward who’s going to be that next big guy. And what you saw from the stats from Pat Bryant — particularly only one drop all year long — that’s a guy, for me, I want them to build up. I want them to focus their energy on him and get him ready so that eventually, when Courtland Sutton goes one way or the other, he’s ready to step into that role. We saw enough from him that was flashy, that looked good from the very beginning — preseason games, him making some amazing catches that you’d only expect a veteran to make. And he did that all year. So he’s the first one that pops to mind, and if he goes off, we’ve got a combo of Courtland Sutton, Jaylen Waddle, and Pat Bryant starts popping off too, dude. That’s a wide receiver corps. David: And now it’s going to be, can he stay healthy? Because the concussion history is already troubling after just one rookie season, having the two concussions — the second one that knocks him out of the playoff game after he was a clear focal point of the Broncos offense for that first drive. So yeah, it’s going to just be, can he stay healthy, can he stay in a good place to contribute to the football team, and do so in a safe way? But a really, really exciting guy, for sure. And for me, I think it’s going to be either him or Sai’vion Jones. KevDan: Yeah, he needs to go. David: We talk about the hardest positions to transition into the NFL, right? We don’t really talk about D-line up there as much, but it really is. It’s one of those positions where size and strength really show up immediately. There’s just a difference between a battle-tested NFL body and a rookie coming in at those trench positions. Even if you are the prototypical size, quote unquote, it just takes a little bit of time to get that traction, to realize the kind of competition you’re going up against, and to realize what your standards have to be. So Sai’vion Jones can come in and look like the player the Broncos drafted. They took Tyler Onyedim in the third round this year — clearly they believe in continuing to rotate those trench players, but that means now, with Sai’vion Jones coming into his second year, I really want to see him show out a little bit more. Que Robinson is one that just felt too easy, KevDan, so I didn’t want to— KevDan: Right. Yeah. David: —go there. KevDan: I didn’t go that way either. I wanted to save that for you just in case you had him ready to go. David: No, I appreciate that, and he really does feel like a guy who could get a lot bigger rotational role this year— KevDan: Yeah. David: —if nothing else. So, excited to see what he can do as well, obviously. KevDan: I would say all three of those guys, for this team to be successful, really have to step up in a big way this year. And I think what we saw from them last year — especially from Pat Bryant, but from the others, the limited amount we saw — I think it’s safe to say that’s a reasonable expectation too. We didn’t see a struggling rookie, we didn’t see somebody who was lost out there, who had no idea what they were doing and had miles to go. This was someone who just needed some experience and then an offseason to reflect, you know? Get strong in the ways they know they need to get strong, recover, recoup mentally, and just be like, “Let’s go.” And one thing — we mentioned it before, but it doesn’t get talked about often enough — man, the jump from college to the NFL is incredibly taxing on these rookies. By the time they hit week 10, 11, 12, that’s basically a full season and playoffs for these guys in college, right? David: Right. KevDan: So then they have weeks 13 through 18, plus playoffs. So yeah, them having this offseason to figure out, “Okay, now you know what it’s like, how to pace yourself through the season” — it’s going to be good. I do want to get this question from Michael here, who is still welcome to the show despite— David: Yes. KevDan: —him being a Vegas Golden Knights fan. I will forgive you in that regard, buddy. David: They got theirs. KevDan: He asks, “How long do you think it’ll take Bo Nix and Jaylen Waddle to develop some chemistry?” Dude, David, the first touchdown already happened today in practice. Well, not today, but I think it was OTAs, whatever the last one was. But they already have. David: Here’s the thing about the chemistry-developing question — and it’s a good question. To me, I don’t think it’s going to take that long, just because of the obvious ways that Jaylen Waddle fits the Bo Nix skill set. His yards-after-catch ability is perfect for when Bo Nix wants to throw the ball short. His ability to beat defenders over the top is perfect for when Bo wants to launch that long ball. To me, the question of chemistry is going to boil down specifically to: is Jaylen Waddle going to be able to help Bo Nix find him when Bo Nix escapes the pocket? In those situations where Bo Nix is scrambling, Courtland Sutton does a really good job of trying to find Bo Nix’s eyes. Can Jaylen Waddle do the same? Because if he does, then I think you’re looking at a really, really promising relationship. KevDan: I like that. I do want to ask you — and additionally, I don’t see a problem here, but people have mentioned it recently. Do you see an injury-history problem with Jaylen Waddle, particularly recently? People are talking; he’s had some injuries recently. And I’m like, “Dude, what are you guys talking about? He’s missed very few games in his career.” But I just want to make sure I’m not missing something here, because people keep talking about it. David: I mean, I guess I’d have to look a little further into that, but KevDan, I’m sorry. If— KevDan: Dude, I would— David: If— KevDan: Yeah. No, I would say if you don’t know about it, that tells me everything I need to know. David: That’s it. I’ve learned over the last few years in this country, when somebody says, “Many people are talking about this,” that can mean a lot of different things— KevDan: For sure. David: —a lot of different things. So, KevDan— KevDan: But it’s good to air it out there, so for other people, if you come across that stuff — it’s crap. David: For sure. Let’s see what’s actually going on, what these players look like, and how it all develops on the field. The Broncos have some questions to get answered. How is Davis Webb going to look in terms of his play calling? Like Mike asked, how are Bo Nix and Jaylen Waddle going to connect? The running backs — how are they going to look? All these things are going to be developing in real time, and you’re going to want to find your information here, because we’re going to give it to you as best we can without the bullshit. David, I don’t want to talk about what’s happening with Cooper. I want to get your take on what the impact of not having him could be, because the more his news develops — the most recent news we saw is his trial date got canceled. He doesn’t have a trial date; they just have a next court date at the end of July. Not expecting to have him for at least the beginning of the season. My concern: Nik Bonitto benefits greatly — and he’s incredibly talented — but he benefits greatly from having Cooper on the other side of him. Without Cooper there, who needs to step up, and how big of an impact is it going to have on the Broncos defense? David: I mean, there’s definitely a chance that it has a significant impact, right? But you still have players like Zach Allen, who’s going to be able to rush the quarterback from the inside. You still have a player like Que Robinson, who we talked about a little bit ago. It’s a deep position for the team. And — excuse me — you still have players like Dondrea Tillman, who might get a little bit more of a chance to show that he was not just a one-year fluke last year as a UFL find. Players are going to have opportunities to show up. The good news is, if you’re the Broncos, you don’t have to have all of them turn into stars. You can replace Jonathon Cooper in the aggregate. He is a good player, don’t get me wrong, but he is not the kind of player who is irreplaceable in the aggregate if you have the right skill sets and a coaching staff that knows how to use the players it has. So yeah, obviously we’ll watch and wait and see what the Cooper situation turns into, but I am not terrified that the Broncos will be unable to handle it. KevDan: I like to hear that, because you know me. I’m the emotional fan, right? I don’t like logic when it comes to football. I leave that to you. You can ground me when I need it. I try to be logical in other things, but football — uh-uh. Let’s get to the emotions. I’m worried. And part of it, like you said — I don’t know if it’s so much the playmaking, but I know that when a player is chosen to wear the number zero, that’s kind of like an unofficial “C” on the chest. That number means something. When the players were allowed to start wearing that in the NFL, taking it from college — you see a guy in college wearing number zero, that’s a guy the rest of the team said, “Yeah, you’re our number zero. You’re our guy.” So to lose that is what kind of concerns me on that front — the leadership aspect. Do I think it’d be a devastating hit to not have him there? No. But I would just wonder, and be concerned, about what kind of impact that’s going to have. David: Well, I can’t really speak too much to that, Kev, but I’ll say this about it: if the allegations that Cooper faces are in any way true, there’s a point to be made that there’s not much of a leadership aspect to a person like that in the first place. So we’ll wait— KevDan: It’s true, yeah. David: —and see what kind of process plays out there before we make any final judgments. But I’m not that worried about a defense that has players like Malcolm Roach and Zach Allen and even Nik Bonitto, and a coach like Vance Joseph, who has been a head coach in the league. It feels to me like they’re going to be able to keep that aspect together. KevDan: You know, I’ll go ahead and take back what I said at the beginning of the show, David. I’m glad — I always feel better when I talk to you about this stuff. You ground me, you help me put things in perspective, and I go, “Okay, maybe I can breathe.” David: What’s the third part of the title of the show up there, Kev? KevDan: Oh yeah — it’s that No B.S.? David: No B.S. I’m cutting— KevDan: Yeah. David: —I’m cutting right through it. We’re cutting right through it tonight. KevDan: I love it. We’re going to start wrapping up here soon, so let’s knock out some of these last questions. Jose asks, “Is Bo Nix going to play in the week one preseason game?” No. Probably not going to see him at all in preseason. If anything, that second preseason game, for a drive. But I would think that unless his ankle is just — like, there’s absolutely no doubt — I would rather him just sit and wait. We know what he can do. What is he going to benefit from, like one drive in a game? But David, I don’t know, what do you think? David: I’m going to go ahead and disagree. I’m going to push back a little bit, because Sean Payton has not exposed Bo Nix overtly in preseason, I think, but neither preseason has he sat out completely. And I think that if he is ready to go with no limitations in training camp, I don’t think the ankle is going to be a consideration as far as keeping him out or putting him in. We’ll just see. It could go either way, I will say that for sure. But I would be more surprised than not to see Bo Nix completely sit out the preseason this year. KevDan: For sure. I like it. We’ll wait and see, but yeah, you’re probably right, David. You tend to be right. David: It’s never wrong, just early. That’s a phrase of mine around my household, and it’s so far— KevDan: There you go. David: —proven accurate. KevDan: This one’s from Cody. Hey, Cody, thanks for joining the show, man — glad to see you here, along with everybody else. For Strnad — looking like he might play at a Pro Bowl level, or even that all-pro inside linebacker level. I do think the Broncos are looking for a way to move away from Singleton. I don’t know if he’s one of the guys they brought back this year because they wanted to, or more so because they needed to. But David, take it away, man. David: He’s going to have his chances, because it’s him, or it’s a Taurean York, or it’s Red Murdock. Those are guys who are going to have chances in training camp and practices. But obviously Strnad, having been here, having re-signed here, is going to have a huge leg up in any quote-unquote competition between him and those guys for inside linebacker. So I will say this, Cody — ooh, I don’t know if I can get quite to the level of confidence in his ability to really take a step up as a player this year, but he’s going to have his opportunity. If it’s going to be in a year, it’s going to be this year. KevDan: I like it. Clayton, glad to see you here, man. Yes, it is warm everywhere, but over 100 in Wisconsin — that just sounds absolutely disgusting. Question from Clayton here for Vance Joseph, obviously. I think for him, he’s going to stay in Denver until he gets picked up for a head coaching job. And that could be next year. That could be in five years. I think more people are still maybe getting the bad taste out of their mouth from his first head coaching experience. But I think it could be in the next couple years, if not this next year, that he’s hired by someone else and we’re going to have to be looking for a new defensive coordinator. David? The expectation this year, and I fully am on board with this, is Super Bowl or bust. I’m sticking to my April prediction of the Broncos winning the Super Bowl this year. To me, I think they kind of have to. They still have those really good deals. Bo Nix’s rookie deal is still in effect. They have the youth of the team. They’re building organically. They have the pieces in place. They just have to take advantage of it. And obviously last year wasn’t really in anybody’s control — it just happened. But if they can take one more step, not only can they get to the big game, I think they can win the big game. David: I love that. I am not going to comment on the Broncos’ Super Bowl chances, KevDan, but I am going to use it to transition to my final thought— KevDan: Yeah. David: —which is that the path to the Super Bowl starts at training camp, and the Broncos released their training camp schedule today. They will have 14 practices that are open to the public. And guys, tickets go quote-unquote “on sale” tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM. They are, of course, free, as they are every year. And because that Broncos new facility is now ready to go, people who go to a practice session will have shade for the first time. KevDan: Thank God. David: Yeah, absolutely. Anybody who knows and has been on that grassy berm knows there is not a whisper of shade unless a cloud comes over, and you are just baking— KevDan: Never. David: —in the sun otherwise. Is everybody watching the freaking World Cup? Because jiminy Christmas — entertaining as hell. You know, never been a huge soccer fan, but I get it now. And yeah, while we wait for training camp, if you’re looking for something sports-wise to keep track of, I can highly recommend the World Cup — the finals on July 19th — so you get almost all the way to training camp by watching. KevDan: Yeah. I’m not a soccer fan in any regard, and I’ve never watched any of the previous World Cups, but this one I’ve kind of watched some of. And I’ve got to say, I’m paying more attention to the fans. The fans just seem awesome. There was a video — I can’t remember what country it was, I think Argentina or something — they’re out there partying. Somebody dropped their wallet, so they had one guy on another guy’s shoulders, and they were all chanting the guy’s name to get his attention. That’s just fans coming together, helping each other out. I just love that kind of stuff. David: Mm-hmm. KevDan: Yeah. Definitely, guys, enjoy it. There’s definitely some good content and videos if you don’t want to watch a full game. But we’ll keep cheering on Team USA and see what they do. It’s going to be fun to watch. David: Yeah, for sure.
