In this week's Belly Up, we talk about how the Broncos said "nah" to any newcomers, why George Paton is heading into 2026 without a new contract, and who will be the next key Denver Bronco to be signed long-term.
In this week's Belly Up, we talk about how the Broncos said "nah" to any newcomers, why George Paton is heading into 2026 without a new contract, and who will be the next key Denver Bronco to be signed long-term.
1) Getting The Band Back Together.
The Chefs went out and signed the Super Bowl MVP, Kenneth Walker III. The Bolts picked up pieces for their sieve-like offensive line while also adding to their run game with Alex Inglold from Miami. The Raiders made some savvy moves (don’t laugh) and backed up the Brinks truck for the best center on the market, along with solid players, like Nakobe Dean, for their beleaguered defense. Long story short, every team in the division made the commitment to challenge Denver for the AFC next season.
Denver chose the passive route, sitting on their hands for the first part of free agency and re-signing Alex Singleton and J.K. Dobbins, notably. Whatever spin the front office is putting on the lack of action, the Broncos are playing just as risky a game in expecting older or injury-prone players to fill major roles when they had the resources to go in another direction.
2) A New Deal for George Paton...maybe?
Lost in all the buzz of free agency is the current situation of General Manager George Paton. Just a couple of years ago, the team was in free agency purgatory after choosing to release Russell Wilson, necessitating the team to eat a massive sum of money in the process. Fast forward to today, and Paton has built an AFC-Championship competing roster built mostly through the draft AND finding some guy named Nix to be the face of the franchise.
GMs don’t normally go into their contract year without a new deal, which is odd that no news has come out about what the negotiations are looking like or if they are even taking place. While there is still plenty of time for the Penners to make a decision either way, especially with the draft being just around the corner, the silence regarding the situation is noticeable. Stay tuned.
3) Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
It's too easy to get caught up in the present, but any NFL team has to keep in mind how the financial choices they make today will affect what happens down the road. Two names that should be on everyone’s radar as far as the next players to be extended should be Marvin Mims Jr. and Riley Moss.
It already appears that preliminary talks have begun with Mims, but is the front office of the Broncos getting high on their own supply by over evaluating their own players? Mims has been a part of some great moments, but hasn’t been the consistent deep-ball threat he was in college. Moss is just a hair below the top-tier cornerbacks in the league, but he comes with his own issues, notably being a walking pass interference flag.
Just because it’s the offseason does not mean that Bourbon, Broncos, and No BS are resting until the start of next season. Listen up every Tuesday as we go into the most important topics of the day, giving you something to tide you over until this fall.
